Other therapeutic areas we work in:

• Endometriosis (affects approximately 1.5 million women in the UK)ⁱ
• Uterine fibroids (estimated to affect around 1 in 2 women at some point in their life)ⁱⁱ

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that lines the womb (endometrium) is found outside the womb, such as in the ovaries and fallopian tubes.ⁱⁱⁱ  It is the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK.ⁱ Currently there is no cure for endometriosis, but there are treatments that can help.

Ipsen’s work in this area aims to relieve symptoms of the condition to prevent it interfering with daily life.

Fibroids (also called uterine myomas or leiomyomas) are benign growths of uterine muscle and fibrous tissue, whose development is influenced by sex hormones, in particular oestrogen.ⁱⁱ At least 1 in 2 women develop one or more fibroids in their lifetime. They usually develop in women aged 30-50 and can sometimes run in families.ⁱⁱ

The majority of fibroids are asymptomatic and therefore require no treatment. However, when fibroids cause discomfort for patients, there are several treatment options to alleviate symptoms.ⁱⁱ
